The second episode of the series Babel of Hollywood explores the problem of self-insertion. Creators, especially in modern Hollywood, have a tendency to insert themselves into their creations. To some degree, this is justified, as all cultural works contain some form of self-insertion by their creators. But when it becomes excessive, the creations turn into fan fiction or outright propaganda for the ideologies of their creators. Combined with a strong push for realism in modern pop culture, this creates a highly manipulative cocktail of propaganda, as seen in shows like The Handmaid’s Tale or The Last of Us. Why is this ultimately just a more sophisticated lie designed to manipulate the viewer? In reality, Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale or a teenage girl scout riding horses in The Last of Us are literally nonsense—merely the propagandistic, fanatical views of the creators of these shows.
